GM: Brian Gutekunst - Packers
The kinds of players he tends to like in the 1st round
Age: He likes younger players, redshirt Sophomores or Juniors. The Green Bay philosophy is big on draft and develop, so the younger they get them in, the more they have to work with. 3 out of Gutekunst's 4 first round draft picks have been Juniors that forgone their senior year of eligibility. The odd man out was 2019's second first round pick Darnell Savage. Savage was a senior but still relatively young.
Athleticism: This is one that's important for every player entering the NFL draft, all prospects are graded mostly on athleticism and production, so that's nothing new. However, Gutekunst has made it clear that he likes elite short area speed. 3 of his 4 picks have displayed incredible 40 yard dashes, and 10 yard splits. The outlier for this was QB Jordan Love who had impressive metrics in those drills as well but assessing QB's is weighted less on pure athleticism and more on performance.
Character: Everyone wants a high character player but some GM's tend to look past it a little more than others. Gutekunst is not the type of GM to take those gambles, especially not in the 1st round. The only gamble on a players' character he has taken so far was in 2018 on Equinimeous St. Brown when he was on a rampant slip into the 6th round after being considered a high day 2 pick. St. Brown's character concerns were not your typical concerns however, he is an extremely intellectual individual who regrettably made a decision to tell GM's and coaches during the draft process that he was not going to play special teams. I say regrettably only because after sliding to the 6th round and being buried on the depth chart, St. Brown now plays special teams.
